ESL Game: In the News

ESL Game: In the News

In the News is a fun writing activity for teens and young learners. In this activity, students create a news story based on another students experience. This activity is a great way to practice writing, speaking and questions forming. This activity is very student-cantered and a great way to personalise writing for students in a fun and interactive way. Level: Young learners 10 + (A2 +), Teens (A2 +) Materials needed: Pencil and paper Learning Objectives: Speaking, writing, questions forming
Method
1. Ask the students to think of 3 interesting things that happened in their family in the past 10 years that would make interesting articles for a local newspaper. You can give some examples such as a robbery, found something interesting or some other story of interest.
2. Tell them to write a suitable headline for each article.
Tips on how to write a good headline:
1. Use numbers
2. Use interesting adjectives (e.g shocking, fun, fantastic etc)
3. Use a Keyword e.g robbery, found, missing etc

3. Put the students in pairs and tell them to exchange their headlines. The partner chooses the one that appeals to them most and, taking on the role of a reporter, does an interview in order to get as much information about the incident as possible.
Encourage students to ask questions – Who, where, what,  why, when to find out as many details as possible.

4. When each student has interviewed their partner, they continue in the role of a reporter and write the article.
Extension: Make a class newspaper with all the stories and allow classes to exchange their newspapers! Get students to illustrate the stories and personalise their newspaper.
