ESL Wordle

ESL Wordle is a free online word guessing game for English language learners — play it in class instantly below.

ESL Wordle

There are many ways to play this game in class but putting students in two teams can be an effective way. The teams try and guess the word before the other team.

How Can Wordle Be Used in the Classroom?
  • Use it as a warm-up either with a random word or a word from the day’s lesson.
  • Post a Wordle each day with a new vocabulary word for students. Once they’ve solved the Wordle, have them look up the definition and then try to use it in the rest of the class.
  • Have students battle in teams to solve the word first.
To make this game more usable in the language classroom I have selected vocabulary that is suitable for learners A2+.

How to use ESL Wordle in the classroom

There are many ways to bring this Wordle classroom game to life. Here are the most effective approaches used by teachers:
  • Team vs. team warm-up. Split the class into two teams. Both teams see the same Wordle board projected on screen and take turns suggesting letters. The first team to correctly guess the word wins a point. This creates instant energy at the start of class.
  • Vocabulary word of the day. Choose a word that ties into your lesson topic. Once students solve the Wordle, ask them to look up the definition, write a sentence, and use the word at least once before class ends.
  • Silent starter. Display the Wordle as students arrive and let them work on it individually before the lesson begins — no instructions needed.
  • Review cooler. End class with a Wordle using a word from the day’s lesson. It doubles as a quick recall check and leaves students on a high note.
  • Spelling focus. For lower-level groups, use the colour feedback to discuss letter patterns, common vowels, and word endings — turning each guess into a mini spelling lesson.
