ESL Warmer: Strange Uses

Strange Uses is a simple ESL Warmer for teens and young learners and even adults. In this activity students work in pairs to think of alternative uses for objects. This activity is a great way to allow students to use their creativity while settling down to class.
Aim: To Brainstorm alternative uses for objects Levels: Lower Intermediate + Learning Objective: Practice speaking, vocabulary and problem solving in English. Materials Needed: A pen and piece of paper for each group

Method:

  1. Put students into pairs or groups of three.
  2. Explain to students that you are going to show them an everyday object. In their teams, students need to think of as many uses as possible for the object other than its intended use.
  3. You will find a list of objects in the description below.
  4. Give the teams a fixed amount of time to write their ideas.
  5. After the time, students share their ideas. Award points for the most creative ideas.
