ESL Icebreaker: Tell Us About Yourself

Tell Us About Yourself is a simple first class icebreaker that works well with teens and adults. In Tell Us About Yourself, the teacher passes around a bag of sweets. The teacher tells the students to take as many sweets as they want but not to eat them just yet. Once all the students have a sweet, the students first count how many sweets they have and tell the teacher. For each sweet the students took they have to say one thing about themselves in English. For example, if a student took 3 sweets they must tell the class 3 things about themselves.

Activity time: 15 minutes

Materials required: Sweets or other treat.

Skills Practiced: Speaking

Level: Teens and adults intermediate +

Method

  1. Pass around a bag of sweets and tell students to take as many sweets as they like but don’t eat any until all the students in the class have some.
  2. As soon as all students have some sweets, ask them to count how many sweets they have.
  3. Next, tell the them that for each sweet they took they must say one thing about themselves.
  4. Start with the student who has the most sweets and continue until all the students have introduced themselves
  5. Enjoy and have fun.

Variation

Use toilet paper instead of sweets. Pass around a roll of toilet paper and have students take as much as they like without explaining why. Continue the activity in a similar way as described above.
